About TC Rotordynamics

The Technical Committee Rotordynamics is one of the 13 committees of the International Federation for the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms: IFToMM. It is considered to be the worldwide leading group of experts in Rotordynamics and consists of specialists from different countries, which are members of IFToMM. Each member country may have up to two representatives in the committee, entitled to vote. In 2006 the Technical Committee Rotordynamics has 32 members from 21 countries.

The general tasks of the Technical Committee Rotordynamics are to support and to develop research and education in this important area of Mechanical Engineering. In more detail the Technical committee

  • helps to exchange the experiences and the knowledge in the international Rotordynamics Communitiy (conferences, publications) and to build up international research joint collaborations;

  • discusses the topics, the locations and dates of coming international Rotordynamic conferences;

  • looks for support for young delegates from poor countries to visit conferences;

  • reviews the conference papers and selects best papers for awards, e.g. the Jorgen W. Lund Memorial Award;

  • evaluates new research directions and decides the introduction of new subcommittees;

  • supports and recommends education activities in Rotordynamics (short courses, University courses and student exchange programs);

  • decides about new members for the Technical Committee.

The Technical Committee is headed by a Chairman who is nominated by the Committee and appointed by the Executive Council. The committee also elects a secretary, who assists the chairman in running the committee's activities. Presently J. S. Rao (India) and Horst Ecker (Austria) are serving in these positions.

The chairman of the Technical Committee - supported by the secretary

  • organize and coordinate the TC-meetings (usually during one of the Rotordynamic conferences);

  • invite for the meetings, prepare the agenda, write the minutes of the meetings and distribute them to the TC-members;

  • leads the discussion during the meetings and asks the members for decisions by votes;

  • reports about the general IFToMM activities, e.g. results of the Executive Council meeting, IFToMM world conferences etc.;

  • reports yearly to the IFToMM Executive Council about the annual activities of the Technical Committee;

  • asks and negotiates with the Executive Council and the treasurer about support for the Technical Committee and for the young delegates programm.

The chairman and the secretary are responsible for the execution of the decisions from the Technical Committee.
